Professor Cindy Smith

The seminar will describe the mission and aims of the National Institute of Justice's International Center, including the development of partnerships between US and non-US researchers to conduct comparative and collaborative research. The Center is involved in a range of other activities, including international visits and fellowships.

Biography

Cindy Smith received her Ph.D. from the University of California-Irvine and holds a M.S. in Justice from American University and a M.S. in Education Administration from National University. As International Center Director, she is currently on leave from the University of Baltimore, where she was Distinguished Research Chair (2001) and Director of the Criminal Justice Graduate Program (2000-05).

She is Chair of the Division of International Criminology, past Secretary/Treasurer of the Division of Corrections and Sentencing of the American Society of Criminology, and Board Member of the International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council to the United Nations.

Dr. Smith was a Fulbright Senior Researcher in Turkey (2005-06), where she researched trafficking in human beings. Her research areas include prison-based therapeutic communities, correctional industries, and juvenile offending and justice.
