CANCELLED - Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: The US-Australia Alliance: Continuity in an Era of Geopolitical Change?

Principal speaker

Dr Stanley Weeks

DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER WARNINGS THIS SEMINAR HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

This presentation analyses the US-Australia Alliance against the background of global, regional, and national geopolitical changes. Most important is the rise of China, including economic/trade ties with Australia and the US, along with the rise of the rest of the indo-Asia-Pacific region, especially the ASEAN countries and India. In assessing what has changed, some see Asian stability as an illusion, while others emphasize Japan as an underrated power.

In the global context, changes have included the resurgence of an aggressive Russia, the rise of dangerous regional powers with WMD/missiles (North Korea, Iran), and a weakening Europe. In the US context, changes are a result of almost two decades of very poor political leadership, fuelling anger at economic stagnation (lost incomes and jobs for the middle class), and no-win wars. The result of this accumulated US public anger and frustration was the rise of Donald Trump.

In light of all this change, the key question is can the post-WWII, post-Cold War, US and Western led global order survive, or is it doomed by aggressive revisionist China and Russia, and an inward-looking US and its European and Asian Allies?

Dr Weeks has extensive strategic and operational planning experience in business, defence, foreign policy, and international and regional security contexts. He has developed and led programs to support strategic planning for regional security for the Navy, OSD, the JCS, NATO, and the State Department, as well as regional Combatant Commanders and Navy Components in the Pacific, European, and Central Command regions. He supported the OSD Asia Pacific policy office in regional multilateral security cooperation and in regional missile defence planning, and led the study in Taiwan and China on Taiwan Missile Defence. Since 1991, Dr Weeks has also been a military and naval analyst for CBS News, participating in dozens of television and radio broadcasts from CBS News New York headquarters during the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq War.
