Title

What happens to people with dementia in hospital

Abstract

The Australian population is ageing, with 21% projected to be over the age of 65 years by 2061. In 2014, 41% of all hospital separations were for people aged 65 years and older. Around 20% of older people in hospital will have some form of dementia. In this presentation, national data on what can happen to older people with dementia in hospital will be reviewed, and research into innovations to address these matters, which is currently being undertaken in collaboration with Gold Coast Health and other Queensland Health sites, will be shared.

September is Dementia Awareness Month

The purpose of Dementia Awareness Month is to encourage Australians to become dementia- aware, have a better understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, and ultimately be encouraged to create communities where people with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value.
