Become a Zika Mozzie Seeker

Our friends at Metro South Health (a branch of Queensland Health) are looking for people to take part in a groundbreaking mosquito monitoring project.

Zika Mozzie Seeker is a unique opportunity for eligible residents to join a "citizen science' project that is fun and easy to do at home. The project aims to increase our confidence that mosquitoes with the potential to spread Zika or Dengue viruses (Aedes aegypti species) have not invaded the Metro South Health region. They're looking for people to set up a backyard mosquito egg trap, collect the eggs and then send back for DNA testing using a revolutionary new method that can rapidly detect a single Zika mosquito egg amongst 5,000 eggs of the local mosquitoes.

Join us to hear from Brian Montgomery, Advanced Medical Entomologist at the Metro Health South Public Health Unit, as he talks us through the processes and people involved in the development of ZMS - a method to revolutionise traditional urban mosquito surveillance to increase confidence that SEQ communities are not at risk of outbreaks of exotic mosquito-borne diseases. You'll also hear from Public Health Physician Dr Kari Jarvinen, as he explores the buzz around Zika, the virus's background, spread and effects, and how we can prevent it.
