Information Systems (IS) research is not only social science in nature, it also frequently draws upon a range of methods used in other disciplines, e.g. sociology, psychology, business, management etc. This seminar will commence with a discussion of the epistemologies or philosophies guiding IS research, as well as selected methodologies applicable to these epistemologies. Following on from this there will be discussion of knowledge management research specifically with regard to organisational learning and knowledge diffusion. Also covered will be aspects of knowledge management issues in the university environment involving Business Process Management (BPM) and Social Network Analysis (SNA), and also work done recently with regard to student understanding of plagiarism, as well as factors affecting offer-acceptance of places. Finally, there will be some discussion of parameters influencing cloud computing adoption by Australian Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) - representing roughly 95% of Australian organisations.
Dr Peter Busch is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computing at Macquarie University as well as the Faculty of Science and Engineering chair of the Human Research Ethics (sub-) Committee (HREC). His background is varied, having been interested in human and physical geography (the latter discipline now called environmental science), he has also passed through librarianship and is now in the discipline of information systems (FoRC 0806), which is the human side of computing. Information systems typically focuses on issues surrounding the management of IT, or human factors in the design of IT, or at a technical level the use and design of databases or service-oriented systems. His current research fits in the first area and more specifically focuses on knowledge management, organisational learning and human capital.
