Dr Saleem Ali
This presentation will consider research on two major mining projects by foreign multinationals in Mongolia and Pakistan. Both encountered considerable difficulties due to opposition from some parts of government that felt that the resources should be developed with fewer concessions to foreign firms and with greater local ownership. In Mongolia, the project eventually became operational whereas in Pakistan the project is still locked up in litigation. The presentation will consider the ways in which China as the dominant hegemonic neighbour to both Mongolia and Pakistan has impacted the investment of Western resource firms in Asia.
Professor Saleem H. Ali holds the Blue and Gold Distinguished Professorship in Energy and the Environment at the University of Delaware. He has also served as Chair in Sustainable Resource Development and Director of the Center for Social Responsibility in Mining at the University of Queensland where he retains research affiliation. He is a member of the United Nations International Resource Panel. Professor Ali received his doctorate in environmental planning from MIT; Masters in Environmental Studies from Yale University and a Bachelors in Chemistry (summa cum laude) from Tufts University.
