The Student Engagement Continuum Model: a professional learning model and app for secondary school teachers

Learner engagement has been identified as one of the most reliable predictors of academic achievement. According to the 2017 Productivity Commission Report, approximately 40% of Australian school students are disengaged from education, increasing their vulnerability to unemployment and civic and social dislocation.

Teacher effectiveness in mitigating against student disengagement is crucial and developing teacher efficacy through targeted professional learning is therefore essential.

Presented by Associate Professor Jeanne Allen and Dr Glenda McGregor, the evidence-based Student Engagement Continuum (SEC) Model, which provides a best practice, holistic model of schooling support for all young adolescent learners will be discussed. We also discuss the Student Engagement and Teacher Reflection App (SETRA), an online professional learning tool based on the SEC Model. SETRA connects teachers' classroom observations of student behaviour with frameworks of best-practicesupport for student engagement, providing contextually relevant professional learning, delivered in real time to teachers via the use of technology.
