Over the last 100 million years, Queensland has supported a diverse range of plant and animal life. Fossils have become cornerstones in our understanding of Australian prehistory. But what does digging up the past look like? Its more than the popular imagery boasting fantastic dinosaurs and heroic narratives of epic discovery in the field. Beyond these dominant forensic and heroic image conventions is another possibility-another side to digging dinosaurs. Elise Hilder views the excavation site as a humble, yet visually rich image of labour, landscape, and community, interrupted by the occasional arrival of obscure-looking fossil forms.
A central part of Elise's photographic practice has involved redirecting the camera onto the seemingly insignificant aspects that make up palaeontological fieldwork and which often fall to the wayside of the official records. This withholding and withdrawing from the more conventional features of fieldwork challenges what we expect to see, or what we think we know about palaeontology and the dinosaur.
