Principal speaker

Dr Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa (Dr Marty Natalegawa)

Join us as Dr Natalegawa shares his insights on the challenges and prospects for leadership in our region, including within ASEAN.

Dr Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa (Dr Natalegawa) served as the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia from 2009-2014. As Foreign Minister, he oversaw Indonesia's emergence as a regional power with global responsibilities. Prior to becoming Foreign Minister, Dr Natalegawa had established a distinguished diplomatic career. He served overseas as Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Kingdom and Ireland, and led Indonesian delegations in numerous multilateral negotiations within the UN and beyond.

Between 2002-2005, Dr Natalegawa was Director General for ASEAN Cooperation within Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This term coincided with Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN, a period marked by intensive effort to promote the idea of an ASEAN Community which was formally endorsed by member countries through the 2003 Bali Concord II.

Today among other activities, Dr Natalegawa serves as a member of the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation; is a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute; and is a member of several international academic advisory bodies.

He is the author of a book titled Does ASEAN Matter? A View From Within.
