Title

Developing and implementing workforce competency frameworks for enhancing care for older people with complex needs

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a substantive transformation in care delivery towards integrated models of care that aim to provide well-coordinated, safe, efficient continuity of care for older people with ongoing, multiple and complex needs. This transformation requires a workforce that is highly competent, and appropriately skilled. A team of researchers led by Dr Juliana Thompson identified a case for developing, and subsequently developed, an Enhanced Care for Older People with Complex Needs (EnCOP) competency framework. EnCOP is standardised and applicable to all professions/sectors/organisations, and all levels of working - staff providing essential care, specialist care and advanced practice. Using a workforce approach that utilises collaborative action research, the team have recently undertaken studies to investigate what is required to implement EnCOP at essential, specialist and advanced practice levels across health and social care services. This presentation discusses findings from these studies, and recommendations for next steps.
