Effective media engagement is a crucial part of academic life. Whether being called upon by journalists for expert comment or trying to get the word out about significant research outcomes, it is imperative that academics feel comfortable with, and capable of, navigating the diverse world of contemporary media.

To that end, our media training sessions aim to amplify our academics' voices when it comes to lifting their external profile. These sessions serve a decidedly mutual benefit, allowing us to better understand the areas of expertise at our fingertips, as well as improve individual academics' abilities and comfort levels in dealing with distinct mediums - be they TV, radio, print or online.

The training sessions utilise a mixture of theoretical and practical activities to help academics better understand the news cycle, what makes a potential story newsworthy, and how to frame their work around a particular angle to give them the best chance of being picked up by media.

As well as explaining the different types of outlets worth approaching - from mainstream media to outlets with niche remits but dedicated audiences - the training sessions aim to help our academics move into a mindset where engaging with the media is not seen as a chore, but a welcomed opportunity with the potential to benefit their own career as well as the broader reputation of the university.
