This workshop is an introduction to the formulation, wording and sequencing of close-ended questions within the context of the logics and practicalities of constructing a research questionnaire. It will provide interactive exercises to develop your understanding of the "dos and don'ts" of writing close-ended survey questions. We demonstrate how the structure of survey responses produces different data types (e.g. ordinal, numeric, ranked). Next, we provide guidelines for writing close-ended survey questions, including those measured with different scales. Particular attention is given to Likert scales with 3 vs 5 vs 7 categories, arrays with odd vs even responses, and non-response options such as "NA" or "Don't Know". We provide examples of multi-item scales and show how to construct conditional and "skip logic" questions. Then, we offer an interactive activity for you to review online survey platforms including Lime Survey, Google Forms, Qualtrics and Survey Monkey. To consolidate the information retrieved in this exercise, we will review the benefits and limitations of each these platforms. Finally, we prepare you to apply these concepts to your own close-ended survey questions.
