Academic editors are here to help-and not just HDR students
A common question editors are asked about their work is, "What exactly do you do?' Perhaps a more relevant question of interest to academic researchers is, "How can an editor help me write effectively and prepare my documents?'
The Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) is the professional association for editors in Australia and New Zealand. IPEd has established a national educational program, funded by the Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund. As part of their Academic Ambassador program, IPEd offers seminars on the editing profession and how editors can help postgraduate students and all academic/research staff.
The focus of this seminar is two-fold: (1) to inform postgraduate students about how an editor can help them prepare their thesis and (2) to inform the wider university community (academic, research and support staff) about how editors can help to facilitate their work and that of their students.
This seminar will offer advice on how academic editing can help make your writing clear by shaping and directing your ideas, perfecting your grammar and syntax, polishing your language and presentation, meeting word/character limits, ensuring that a multi-authored document reads with one "voice' and checking for formatting and consistency.
Here is a brief outline of the topics covered in the 1-hour seminar:
· different types of editing (substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading)
· benefits of working with an academic editor
· IPEd's revised (2019) Guidelines for editing research theses
· tips on finding and working with an academic editor
· tips for writing, self-editing and editing the work of others (students, colleagues).
There will be time for questions and discussion
