Writing for Meaning or Meaningless Writing? Examining Teachers' Writing Practices and Children's Writing Development

Writing for Meaning or Meaningless Writing? Examining Teachers' Writing Practices and Children's Writing Development

Principal speaker

Dr Hope K. Gerde

Other speakers

Dr Gary E. Bingham

Dr Hope K. Gerde, Associate Professor at Michigan State University and Dr Gary E. Bingham, Professor at Georgia State University, USA, will share their collaborative research examining theoretical frameworks, development, and teaching practices for early writing. Using a multicomponent model of early writing which includes composing, spelling, and handwriting, their work examines the relationship between teachers' practices and children's writing development. This work identifies the predictive value of strategies that promote meaningful opportunities to write and supports honour writing as communication over a primary focus on handwriting. These findings provide a foundation for a series of studies exploring the conceptualization and measurement of early composition. In addition, their research identifying growth trajectories and predictors of early writing will be discussed. Hope K. Gerde, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Michigan State University, USA. Dr. Gerde earned her master's and doctoral degrees from Purdue University and is a former preschool teacher. Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of approaches to promoting growth in children's early language and literacy skills, particularly early writing, via high-quality professional development for teachers. She examines the interrelations between early reading and writing development and how at-risk children's language and literacy development is affected by the quality of the adult-child interactions they experience across contexts. Dr Gerde is currently Principal Investigator of the US Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences-funded study to design a web-based teacher professional development program for literacy and Co-PI of two National Science Foundation-funded projects evaluating the effects of an online coaching protocol she developed for enhancing early childhood teachers' science practices and children's science learning. Dr Gerde is a co-director of the Early Language and Literacy Investigations (ELLI) Laboratory, which engages undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral research fellows in various federally funded language and literacy focused research projects. She teaches undergraduate courses in early childhood curriculum development and graduate courses in advanced language and literacy development and prevention and intervention research for early childhood education. In addition, Dr Gerde leads Michigan State University's premiere online bachelor's degree in early childhood care and education sponsored by the Great Plains IDEA.

Gary Bingham is a professor in the Department of Early childhood and Elementary Education at Georgia State University. He received his PhD in child development and family studies from Purdue University. His federally-funded research examines home and school factors that contribute to the academic achievement of culturally and linguistically diverse children. Specifically, his research aims to discover the impact of high-quality adult-child interactions, particularly with regard to writing, reading and language facilitation. This work is funded by the US Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences, the Georgia Department of Education, Easter Seals Foundation and more. His research has been published in a number of high-quality early childhood and language and literacy journals including Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Reading Research Quarterly, and Reading and Writing. Bingham is the coordinator of the PhD program in early and elementary education, a member of the Board of Regents initiative on research on the Challenges of acquiring Language and Literacy (RCALL) and a founding member of the Urban Child Study Centre in the College of Education and Human Development
