To survey and engage with the innermost anxieties, obsessions, longings and hopes of another person is an unusual act, an uncanny act, one which has the potential to disorient and dizzy the surveyor. The domestic is a contested space - a place of love, joy, fear, birth, and ultimately death. Each of the exhibiting artists in Unhomely makes work engaging with the home, examining the wide array of emotion which one may attach to their personal domestic.
Voyeurism has been stripped of its taboos. The viewer is invited into the emotional architecture of each of the makers' minds, and furthermore encouraged to inhabit it - home is where you hang your hat. Themes of loss and decomposition link each of the works to one another, and are used as reference points by which we may explore the meaning which can be found in the temporal.
