Integrating Hermeneutic Phenomenology in Qual-Dominant Mixed Methods

Principal speaker

Dr Judy Rose

This seminar provides an historical overview of hermeneutic phenomenology (HP), an interpretive methodology for studying a person's life experience. We explain how HP methods provide a nuanced understanding of the nature or essence of human experience in relation to phenomena (e.g., maltreated boys experiences of healing). The seminar then illustrates developments in HP methodology by describing a qualitative-dominant mixed method study on the lived experience of East Asian international students as foreign-accented speakers in Australian higher education (Park, 2021). This doctoral study used a survey to gain a preliminary understanding of the phenomenon, before following up with in-depth interviews. Next, we provide detail on the HP interviewing method whereby researchers engage in a dialogic cycle of questioning and reflection. We then look at how parts of the textual data collected through multiple interviews can be combined to create an understanding of the text as a whole (i.e., lived experience). Finally, this seminar shares some of the challenges, benefits and constraints of adopting HP methodology and analysis.

Format: This seminar will be delivered online during a 1.5-hour period, via Collaborate, including ½ hour Q & A.

Pre-requisites: This seminar is pitched towards researchers who already have some understanding of phenomenology. We presume no prior knowledge of the hermeneutic process. A seminar on a related method addresses "Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of Interview Data in Qual-Dom MM'.

Relationship to other RED workshops and seminars: This is a companion to "Mixed Methods Foundations' workshops (MM 1-6), "Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of Interview Data in Qual-Dom MM", "Formulating Open-ended Questions for Interviews as Part of MM", and "Interviewing skills as part of MM" workshops and seminars.
