Community-based research: Uncle Mervyn and the Gooniyandi

Principal speaker

Dr Tim Mahoney

Dr Tim Maloney's research has seen him develop a close relationship with the Gooniyandi people of the Kimberley. He researches with Gooniyandi Elder, Uncle Mervyn Street and other Muludja elders to record local stories in language and investigate archaeological histories with scientific and traditional knowledge methods.

His work has seen him involved in community-driven archaeological excavation and stone tool analysis; site, song line and story recording; ethnobotanical knowledge; creating a GPS data base with Gooniyandi rangers and the production of dual language books in 2018:

- Ngindaji ngamoo-ngamoo-ninghi ngarrgi ngarrangyi-ga goowag-nga ngarragi.

- Balanyi gandoowirri wardbirri gamba gamanbirrayi. -

Ngindaji-na balanyi-yirri wardbirri goorroola miga-na warang-goorroo gamba warang-ga Yilba.

As a non-Indigenous researcher Tim's seminar will look at relationships, community-driven research, and what you can achieve from a well-built and respectful research partnership.
