Title: Through the Looking Glass: Using Behavioural Observation in Health Research

Seminar Overview -

Behavioural observation is a widely used method of assessment in the psychological and behavioural sciences and can also be extremely useful in the health research context. As a research tool, it can provide objective quantitative data to establish current rates or levels of behaviour, set goals for change, and assess for change over time or following intervention. Importantly, behavioural observation helps to circumvent the limitations of self-report measures and allows us to test relationships between observed and self-reported behaviour and important health outcomes. This seminar will explore the use of behavioural observation in health research. It will examine the characteristics of reliable and valid measures of observed behaviour; explore different methods of observing, recording, and coding behaviour; and discuss important practical considerations for those wanting to use behavioural observation in their own research.
