Perspectives: Asia | Surviving the New Cold War as a Middle Power

Principal speaker

Dr Peter K. Lee

As a new Cold War takes shape in the Indo-Pacific, middle powers like Australia face increasingly hard choices between the United States and China. The great powers offer rewards like access to markets and cutting-edge technologies while using coercion and punishment to secure compliance. But a key difference from the last Cold War is that Australia now finds itself in the company of more middle powers than it once did. What can we learn from regional partners like South Korea who are dealing with similar challenges from the United States and China? How can middle powers cooperate to secure their interests in a contested but multipolar Asia? In this Perspectives: Asia Lecture, Dr Peter K. Lee will discuss how middle powers can not only survive, but also thrive, in this new era of great power competition by working more closely with each other.
