Principal speaker

Professor Catherine Pickering

Some people commence their PhD with considerable professional and personal experiences. In this two hour workshop we will share experiences and information about the challenges and benefits for such candidates and how to design projects to both facilitate career transitioning as well as capitalize on existing knowledge and skills.

The workshop will start with some background about how many and who undertakes PhD with professional backgrounds, the experience of others, and strategies for designing the PhD to utilize such backgrounds as well as dealing with sometimes feeling of otherness.

There was very positive feedback from those participating in this workshop in the past including:

"So useful to get guidance relevant to people who have not just come straight from school, to uni, to HDR studies. I particularly liked how it encourages us to consider ways to capitalise on our lived experiences and expertise in out PhDs. I also liked connecting with other like-minded students in similar situations."

" good to hear about other mature students experiences and backgrounds…..options on how to deliver a PhD beyond the traditional giant thesis at end reference to materials that provide useful and practical advice and help to address issues as they come forward"
