Description
Social media are internet-based tools like Facebook, Youtube or Twitter, used to facilitate social and community interaction and communication in online spaces or sites. Social networks refer to groups that mobilise through the use of social media.
Overview
Social media has become an established mechanism for communication by Griffith University. Griffith has a number of official social media sites and there are numerous unofficial sites that have been created by past and present students and staff.
Interest and participation in social media continues to grow exponentially. Increasingly, its use has extended to organisations that recognise the benefits social media offers to engage their communities (past, present and future).
Considerations
Griffith University has corporate accounts with the following social media services:
Facebook is a Social Networking App that provides a range of tools. All content is stored on Facebook servers and privacy issues are paramount. It ;is recommended you check privacy and security settings regularly, as they change regularly without notice. Facebook can be used very effectively as a communicative and collaborative learning space.
Considerations
Use of Facebook for assessment purposes is not recommended. It can be hard to get accurate data around contribution and meaningful engagement. Facebook sites should NEVER replace Learning@Griffith Course sites. Bear in mind some Students prefer not to be available on Social Media so cross-posting to both platforms is recommended practice.
Twitter (Twitter.com) is an online social media application that takes microblogging to a rapid and highly engaged level. Create an account, tweet (post) and search for topics of interest by putting a # (hastag) before your search term. Mobile applications (for use on devices) are also available for download via iTunes and Apple Play stores. Provides instantaneous peer-to-peer communication that enhances understanding. Encourages students to listen carefully, gather information and multi-task. Enables interactivity through class discussions, excites learners and fosters greater student participation (Kassens-Noor, 2012).
Yammer (Internal Social Network) At Griffith University is also used for Learning & Teaching purposes to provide a safe social environments for both Staff (All Company) and Staff/Student engagement (via Yammer External Networks). To learn more and find strategies, check out #39;Yammer for Learning & Teaching' here on Explore.
Social & Students
Student behaviour and academic integrity are covered by the Griffith University Student Charter and Code of Conduct. Do not share personal information via any social media within a learning & teaching context. Always be clear on purpose, and 'house rules' when using Twitter for learning. Bear in mind, not all students will be comfortable using 'Social Media'. Adding a link in your Course for your students to this Netiquette Guide may assist.
