Griffith University theatre students and graduates will put their comedic talents to good use when they perform at the 2006 Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival from April 13-17.
As part of a collaboration between current students and graduates of the Gold Coast Theatre Department, the GU Comix show combines stand-up comedy, sketch and physical and improvised comedy.
Featured acts include graduate David Eastgate who has just returned from a successful engagement as the lead street entertainer at Universal Studios, Osaka, Japan. He will be supported by Nick Stewart (former lead guitarist of band George) and the cast. David’s stable of characters includes a geriatric rock star, a wannabe roadie and a demented Scotsman.
Theatre Studies senior lecturer Dr Michael Foster said the café-style comedy show, GU Comix was devised as an alternative, ‘chill-out’ zone for festival patrons. He said each night would feature two, one-hour segments with selected highlights repeated over the weekend by popular demand.
“The show’s concept emphasises interactivity with opportunities for audience members to become involved in the madcap troupe’s antics,’’ he said.
“Acts include the popular ‘Menu’ where a cast of bizarre characters entertain ‘diners’ with maximum energy at the table.
“We also have solo stand-up emerging and established comedians, a version of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ and highly-skilled physical performers who will present acro-balance and adagio style pieces throughout the season.”
