It’s Financial Planning Week and as part of the celebrations Griffith University financial planning students are speed-dating industry.
The speed-dating session, which is part of the second professional development week for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Planning — Professional), aims to help students and employers line-up suitable internships for next year.
As part of the professional study mode students complete paid internships part-time while studying part-time after the first year and still complete the degree in three years.
Program Convenor Dr Mark Brimble said the speed-dating session would provide a fun networking opportunity.
“The speed-dating session allows students to meet a number of potential employers and find out more about their company.
“There are opportunities for the students to network with industry throughout the program, but this session makes sure they get to meet a number of potential employers and ask questions directly about the firm’s work environment.
“It also gives the employers the chance to meet a number of students, and find out what they are like before they receive internship applications.”
As part of the Griffith Business School Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA) Professional Development Week more than 40 industry professionals will run workshops with the students.
Sharing her wisdom about the profession, FPA CEO Joanne Bloch will address the more than 100 first, second and third year students.
Workshops cover everything from confidence in drama, excel spread sheeting, recruitment processes to interview skills, different roles in the profession, responsibility in the profession and more.
The professional development week builds on what was covered in the first, which was held before trimester one started.
“The response from the first professional development week was exceptional and we hope to build on that with this time,” Dr Brimble said.
“Students and industry alike love the degree and each day we receive more and more enquiries from firms wanting to get involved.
“The professional study mode really is creating a new standard of job-ready graduates.”
