Griffith Welcomes 18 New AusAID Students

Griffith University has recently welcomed 18 new students sponsored by the Australian government’s AusAID scholarship program. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals from developing countries who, on completion of their degrees, return home to help develop their home countries. This semester, our AusAID students came from 12 different countries ranging from Malawi to Indonesia, Tonga to Bangladesh. The scholars will be studying in various areas of the University including Environment, Education and Business.

Our new AusAID students have recently completed a five week orientation program that saw them learning about academic skills, library research, computing, tenancy and accommodation. They participated in activities on budgeting, personal safety and Australian culture. But it wasn’t all serious! Fun was had by all on an excursion to Kangaroo Point where they were treated to some Aboriginal culture and found themselves learning how to perform traditional Aboriginal dances, throw a boomerang and produce fire with just a few sticks and some dry grass! A trip to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast also saw them getting up close and personal with some Aussie wildlife including kangaroos, koalas and snakes.

Griffith University and the International Office extends a huge welcome to our new AusAID students and wishes them all the best in their studies here at Griffith. If you meet an AusAID student in one of your classes, make sure you say “Hi”!
