Showcase reveals talented arts students

Final-year (2010) Bachelor of Arts students will showcase a range of final-year projects at two inaugural events this month.

The Griffith University Bachelor of Arts Expo will be held at the Gold Coast campus on Thursday, October 7 from 3pm to 7pm.

Gold Coast Social Enterprise Coordinator Dr Heather Anderson said the event was a chance for third-year arts students to share their talents and graduate skills with industry partners, potential employers, academics and the community.

Student Jess Roguski said the Social Enterprise experience had been a valuable aspect of her degree.

“The Social Enterprise stream has given me the opportunity to practically apply the skills I was learning throughout my degree,” she said.

Students will be available to discuss their projects and answer questions about their experiences with a Griffith Bachelor of Arts degree.

Short films, art works, markets and live music are just some of the activities on offer at the Bachelor of Arts Showcase on Saturday, October 23 at Nathan campus.

Event organiser and student Adam Brown said the showcase aimed to highlight the range and diversity of projects undertaken by the students as part of their final-year social enterprise experience.

“The program includes short documentaries, museum and art installations, digital displays and live music performances,’’ he said.

“This is the first event of its kind and we’re hoping to attract people who are thinking about studying an arts degree and want to find out more, or those who just want a great day out.”

The social enterprise strand enables students to work with a social enterprise (non-for-profit) organisation in the final year of their degree.

“Because the BA historically deals with social and ethical concerns, the idea is that it will produce students who are work-ready after gaining experience from working with social enterprise industry partners,’’ Adam said.

“More than 30 organisations have come aboard as our industry partners including Brisbane City Council, the Leukaemia Foundation, Lifeline, the PCYC and more.

“The showcase is the collective expression and celebration of all the graduating Arts students.”
