Leading educators from across the country and overseas will gather at the International Symposium for Leadership, Learning and Change at the Griffith Graduate Centre today and tomorrow.
Professor Greer Johnson from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research says the conference aims to enhance understanding of the connections between research theory and practice.
“It will showcase the work conducted by GIER members and international colleagues focussed on leadership and learning, and its impact on diverse and disadvantaged communities.”
Professor Johnson is leading a research team to improve literacy rates in 48 schools with medium to high Indigenous student enrolments across Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
The Principal as Literacy Leaders with Indigenous Communities project aims to improve Standard Australian English literacy outcomes for Indigenous students by developing the literacy and leadership capabilities of school and community leadership teams.
The schools’ principals and their indigenous leadership partners will work with Literacy Leadership Mentors who are practising principals to implement reading action projects to increase levels of reading in schools.
“The project encourages principals, teachers, families and community members to reflect on issues surrounding learning to read and reading in their schools and communities,’’ Professor Johnson said.
