Should I stay or should I go?: working in Australia’s aged care industry

WOW-affiliated student member, Katrina Radford was awarded first prize ($500) by a judging panel of three Griffith Business School academic staff (including GBS HDR Director and WOW member, Professor Kate Hutchings), from a pool of 27 entries in the 2012 GBS Poster Competition in September. Four additional WOW-affiliated student members entered the Competition, which is held annually to provide students with an opportunity to communicate the importance of their HDR research to a relevant and interested audience — Amy Collins, Jane Kerr, Maggie May and Thi Thu Thao Nguyen.

Entitled ‘Who Will Care For You When You Need it the Most’, Katrina’s entry highlighted the contribution her research seeks to make to the field of workplace recruitment and retention factors in the Australian aged care industry. Having sought survey participation from two thousand employees involved in the sector, Ms Radford is particularly interested in identifying how the combined influences of personal characteristics, and organisational and employee behaviour contribute to employees’ intentions to remain in or leave such workplaces.

Through collaboration with Griffith University Art and Design students, the Competition requires GBS HDRs to produce an A1 sized poster describing their research, whilst communicating expected outcomes. All GBS HDR students are required to enter this competition within twelve months of their candidature confirmation.

Furthermore, Katrina, Thao and a third WOW-affiliated HDR student, Mr John Martin, also participated in the GBS’ 2012 Three Minute Thesis competition in August.

Katrina’s principal supervisor is Centre for Work, Organisation and Wellbeing member Dr Kate Shacklock.
