Long on vision, short on detail

Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s release of the much anticipated “Australia in the Asian Century” white paper marks a potential turning point in Australia’s engagement with the region.

But while strong on vision and rhetorical commitment, the white paper provides no compelling message about how government will better resource the capabilities that are integral to deeper regional engagement, in particular, our poorly resourced diplomatic service or training programs to deliver dynamic Asian language teachers in primary and secondary education according to Professor Andrew O’Neil in an opinion piece in the Financial Review.
