How higher education can transform women’s lives will be the discussion focus on 8March, as Griffith University’s Professor Jayne Clapton arrives in Gympie to speak atthe International Women’s Day (IWD) Breakfast.
Held by the Zonta Club of Gympie, this year’s United Nations IWD theme is The GenderAgenda: Gaining momentum? and is coupled with Zonta’s campaign to ‘Say no todomestic violence against women and children’.
Having begun university at the age of 31 and a strong believer in the transformativeopportunities presented by achieving in higher education, Professor Clapton from GriffithHealth, will discuss the importance of the Widening Participation agenda in HigherEducation and the work being done for student success, especially for students from non-traditionalbackgrounds.
She will draw from her experiences of working on Griffith’s Logan Campus with studentsand staff from a diverse range of backgrounds. What these experiences have taught herabout the transformative power of education, particularly in women’s lives, will be a focusof the presentation.
A Gympie resident herself, Professor Clapton will also talk about some of the localopportunities available to women in the area.
