Dr Nicole George, Lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies, School of Political Science and International Studies, University of Queensland spoke at the recent South Pacific Studies Group meeting.
Gender violence persists in the Pacific islands region as an epidemic that is resistant to treatment. More disturbing is the fact that these levels have remained constant despite 30 years of aid programming in this area. There is strong evidence to suggest that in many parts of the region, gender violence may be increasing in both incidence and severity.
Dr George explained that it is time to develop new approaches to combat this phenomenon. While much of the current work in this area has focussed on the cultural foundations of violence, Dr George has developed an analysis of gender violence that emphasizes the links between women’s political and economic standing and their subsequent capacity to secure violence-free lives.
