Con Jazz in the Queen Street Mall

Queensland ConservatoriumGriffith University jazz students will be performing in the Queen Street Mall this weekend.

Showcasing some of Brisbane’s wonderful emerging musical talent, the groups will be performing over 3 stages from 11 – 13 October.

Their music covers a wide range of styles, with a mix of original works with new renditions and arrangements of songs from jazz, funk, and Klezmer traditions.

Groups will appearfrom 4.30pm on Friday, from 11.30 on Saturday and from 11.30 on Sunday.

 

Friday October 11
Milano Stage (top of Mall)
The Paul Kunne Bane
4:30pm-7pm

The Paul Kunne Band is a fun, versatile and entertaining Brisbane-based covers band, specialising in funky interpretations of party favourites from the last four decades. We are a five piece professional band of musicians from the Griffith Conservatorium with a variety of experiences in the music industry.

Main Stage (middle of Mall)
New Brisbane Soul Collective
5pm-7:30pm

The New Brisbane Soul Collective are an up and coming band in the Brisbane scene, performing classic soul tunes from the 60’s right up to Amy Winehouse. The members are all students/graduates of the Queensland Conservatorium, delivering tasty soul at a high standard of playing. The band features the fabulous Amy Backhouse on vocals, a jazz singer with a following of her own in Brisbane already.

La Trav
5pm-7:30pm

La Trav is Brisbane singer songwriter Bethan Ellsmore. Along with a motley crew of musicians, La Trav unleashes original piano driven rock and pop, tinged with heartache, unbridled passion and just a hint of the diva…

 

Saturday October 12

Milano Stage
St Thomas
11:30am-2pm

Saint Thomas is led by the vocals of Tom Cromwell combined with Billy Saunders on tenor saxophone, Matthew Cook on bass, Rebecca Meimaris on drums and David Webster on guitar.
All members of Saint Thomas have a deep passion for jazz, which is reflected in their repertoire. The group enjoys playing classic standards as well as a mix of contemporary funk tunes that will be sure to have you dancing!

Main Stage
Confuscius
12pm-2:30pm

Confucius are a pretty groovy little ensemble playing some good time funk, fusion, jazz and even a bit of hip hop! The members are all music students of the Queensland Conservatorium and the band is tutored by the highly-acclaimed Jose McLaughlin. Confucius will bring you all the funkadelics you could ask for at a high standard of playing.

Ditsch
12pm-2:30pm

Ditsch performs charts written predominantly by Australian and New Zealand composers. Exciting jazz is produced through the harmonisation, improvisation and collaboration of musical ideas of Jodie O’Brien (saxophone), Tristan Rogers and Lachlan Szery (trumpets), Joseph Rabjohns (guitar), Michael Louttit (bass), Isaac Cavallaro (drums) and Jeff Usher (Piano).

 

Sunday October 13

Digby

Digby is a friendly dog. We are also called Digby. Digby the dog will unfortunately not be present at the gig. But that’s okay – we’ll be there. Our repertoire is drawn from Digby’s paw selection of contemporary tunes. You’ll be sure to Dig(by) our sounds.

Brisbane based ensemble ConKlezmer (directed by acclaimed Yitzhak Yedid) are a versatile group who present entertaining and intriguing performances of Jewish music incorporating traditional klezmer, jazz and contemporary roots.
