Bread winner to give franchising master class

Bakery boss Michael Sherlock will give a Master Class in Brisbane in December.

Having made a lot of dough in the franchising industry, former Brumby’s bakery boss Michael Sherlock is now sharing his recipe for success with others seeking their own rise to the top.

Mr Sherlock was this year made an Adjunct Professor at the Griffith Business School’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Franchising Excellence and will be the star attraction at the Centre’s one-day Franchise Growth Master Class to be held in Brisbane on 5 December 2013.

This unique event is designed for up-and-coming franchisors to accelerate the growth of their business through first-hand insights and the development of tailored action plans.

The two worked together to successfully steer the stellar growth of Brumby’s and also co-authored the book ‘Jumpshift!: Shift Your Business into Hyper-Drive’.

The personalised event will guide attendees through a step-by-step actionable process that is customised to drive the future strategy and success of their business.

Overcoming impediments

Topics that will be covered include planning, research, strategy, structure, change management, people, franchisee engagement, systems, customers, results, action and evaluation.

“Franchising success usually starts with identifying and then overcoming the impediments to growth in your franchise, regardless of your sector or size,” Mr Sherlock said.

“Whatever is holding your business back, we will find it and you will walk away with a one-page action plan to overcome these barriers. This is a rare opportunity to learn the proven strategies for success from people who have been there and done it at the top level of franchising.

“It is all about investing one day in your business and your team to unleash the full potential of your franchise, to have a plan in place before Christmas and get off to a strong start to 2014.”

Mr Sherlock and Mr Anderson will personally share the framework, structure and processes that transformed Brumby’s from an ailing set of bakery shops into one of the largest and most successful bakery franchise systems in Australasia.

Under Michael’s leadership, the Brumby’s store network grew to in excess of 300 and its share price doubled annually from 56 cents to nearly $3.60 before it was sold to Retail Food Group for $46 million in 2007.

“Brumby’s is a success story that can be repeated as the processes that were put in place are tried and tested and can be applied to any business,” Mr Sherlock said.

“All businesses that attend the Master Class will leave with a clear and measurable action plan that is fully customised to accelerate growth in their franchise.

“Importantly, they will also receive a free follow-up consultation up to 90 days after the event to review progress in implementing the plan, as this is where many franchises fall short.”

In demand

Since selling Brumby’s, Mr Sherlock has been in demand across Australia and around the world as a guest speaker, mentor and consultant. He has worked with more than 100 Australian and international franchises spanning all market sectors.

He said the Griffith Business School’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Franchising Excellence is unique in providing strategic insight into the sector and fostering high-level performance.

“I am excited by the opportunity to pass on the lessons and benefits of my more than three decades of franchise experience to the next generation of industry leaders,” he said.

“There are a lot of great businesses in the franchise sector that just need a helping hand to guide them in the processes for achieving accelerated growth. The Franchise Growth Master Class is a unique chance to have experienced franchising leaders analyse your business and develop a tailored path to success, at a fraction of a cost of larger industry events.”
