After the OP, pathways offer fresh study hope

Professor Sue Spence says aspiring university students have several options to help fulfil their dream of tertiary study

The long wait is almost over for Queensland’s thousands of aspiring university students. Year 12 results and OP scores will be available online from 9am on Saturday (December 14).

For many, this will be a time to celebrate secondary school achievements and anticipate the tertiary challenge ahead.

However, for those whose results don’t meet expectations, the message from Griffith University is this: don’t panic and don’t give up.

“Every year there are students whose results mean they are unable to get into their preferred program straight away,” said Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Sue Spence.

“That doesn’t mean their university dream is over because there are a number of other effective pathways to tertiary study.

“For example, you can apply for a program that may not have such a high OP cut-off and then later, depending on grades, you may apply to transfer into your preferred program.

“Griffith also has a dual qualification arrangement with TAFE and this can culminate in being able to transfer into a Griffith Bachelor degree.”

Professor Spence added that Griffith’s partnership with the Queensland Institute of Business and Technology allows students to study a Diploma at first-year university level in some degrees before, and again depending on Grade Point Average, moving to Griffith.

Also, through Open Universities Australia, students who complete four subjects above a pre-determined GPA cut-off may then apply for a place at Griffith.

“It’s all about considering the best pathway for you, one that provides a solid study foundation and maximises the possibility of future university enrolment and study,” Professor Spence said.

On Saturday, students will be able to access their 2013 Year 12 results and OP scores through the Queensland Studies Authority’s Student Connect website.

To help prospective students make the most of their OP, Griffith University will be holding Options Information Sessions at the Gold Coast and South Bank campuses from 3pm-6pm on Tuesday, December 17.
