Griffith sets the pace

Off and racing...2014 GC Marathon

With more than 700 registered competitors Team Griffith was off and running in perfect weather at this year’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon.

Griffith again won both the Largest Corporate Team and Most Kilometres Travelled awards.

Vice ChancellorProfessor Ian O’Connor said he was delighted that Griffith had the largest team in the Marathon.

“It is extraordinary that so many people (700 Griffith staff/students/alumni in total) are participating and 100 members of the Griffith team are competing in the full marathon. This is one of my favourite community events on the Gold Coast,” he said.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Martin Betts completed the 10km event with a personal best.

“It’s a great event for bringing all parts of Griffith University together. It is a great community event that enables us to be proud on the streets of the Gold Coast – fantastic day.

“I ran just under an hour which is as fast as I’ve ever done it,” he said

GC Marathon Griffith team Manager Ms Maya Conway, who has coordinated the Griffith team since 2012 said it gets better every year.

“I have been coordinating this event since we first entered a ‘Griffith Team’ back in 2012, it is a fun weekend and fantastic event that gets bigger and better every year.”

Ms Conway also thanked the volunteers for their valuable time over the weekend.

“It was a wonderful team effort over the weekend with students, staff and alumni who donated their time to assist in making 2014 the best year yet.”

“Students from Griffith’s Physiotherapy Clinic were also on hand providing much needed massages and recovery treatment which the runners were very grateful for.”
