Griffith’s Commonwealth Games athletes are off to a shining start in Glasgow withEmma McKeonwinning two gold medals in the pool overnight.

The 20 year oldBachelor of Public Healthand Health Promotionstudent took out the200m freestyle event in a Commonwealth Games record time of 1:55.57.

Not content with that, Emma then backed up the win by smashing the world record in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay along with Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell and Melanie Schlanger.As a heat swimmer in the 4x100m relay, Bachelor of Business studentBrittany Elmslie also received a gold medal.

Emma is set to make a further splash at Glasgow after qualifying fourth fastest for tonight’s 100m butterfly event.

AndGriffith architecturestudentChris Wrightis another strong medal hopeafter qualifying for tonight’s final of the men’s 50m butterfly.

In other first day news, Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion student Ashleigh Gentle finished ninth in the women’s triathlon, Brandie O’Connor won bronze in the paracycling tandem sprint and Tegan Napper just missed out on a medal when she finished fourth in the 48kg weightlifting event.

“It’s a really solid start to the Games and I think we will continue to see great thingsin the pool in the next few days,” says Duncan FreeOAM, Manager of the Griffith Sports College.

“Emma McKeon has set the pace and our other swimmers will thrive from it.”
