When Alix Lencz discovered Griffith’s Bachelor of Contemporary and Applied Theatre she knew it was perfect for her because it didn’t just focus on performing.
“It also exposed me to all the elements involved in a production,’’ the 2010 graduate said.
After completing her first year at Griffith, she found a liking for backstage and production.
“I was very impressed with my lecturers, as once I had made it known that’s what I wanted to pursue they were all supportive and introduced me to some amazing industry contacts. This set my career in motion.”
Since graduating, she has travelled around the world working for some of the largest Arts Festivals including:Edinburgh Fringe Festivals,Adelaide Fringe Festival,Sydney Festival,Melbourne International Comedy FestivalandGreenwich + Docklands Festival.
“The degree is both collaborative and practice-based and our lecturers are active practitioners,’’ says Chair in Applied Theatre Professor Michael Balfour.
“This means students are in the best hands to gain the skills and knowledge needed to work in industry.
“Each year we stagemajor productions, and students have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as directing, performance, applied theatre, theatre history, technical theatre and writing for performance.”
While Professor Balfour cautions working in the arts is hard work, he said most careers were portfolio-based, that is, you need at least two to three skills to get by.
The good news is these skills are all taught in the Bachelor of Contemporary and Applied Theatre. They are also highly transferable with graduates working in a diverse range of areas including: events management, public relations, arts administration, teaching, radio, television, journalism, corporate/social affairs, arts festivals, publishing, computer games design and community work.
The program can also be combined with a one-year Graduate Diploma in Education leading to a career in teaching.
