Ever wanted to get down to Gangnam Style with a drone? See an intricate design come to life in the form of chocolate? Feel like you’re in Wall St in a world-class financial trading room?
Griffith University’s Open Day will be buzzing with technology-themed activities across three campuses at the Gold Coast, Nathan (Brisbane) and South Bank — plus there will even be Pokemon to catch while you’re busy filling your brain with knowledge and new career pathways.
The Gold Coast “Tech Trail” features stops at the virtual pharmacy dispensary, 3D printing at the Red Zone, a virtual reality experience, science displays featuring drones and the financial trading room.
If you check-in at each site you will go in the draw to win one of two 6-month Netflix vouchers.
Industrial design students Megan Louise Pope and Georgina McDonald will be showing off the 3D chocolate printer in the Red Zone and Griffith logos they’ve crafted on the machine.
A bite-sized piece of chocolate takes just a minute to make, while other intricate designs that could take cake decorators hours by hand can be printed in less than 10 minutes.
The students have teamed up with New Farm Confectionary in Brisbane to take their studies into the real world, creating chocolate on a commercial level.
“We’re thinking of making little cupcake toppers and little designs showing everyone how this new technology is being incorporated in today’s world,” says Georgina.
“If you’re going to have a logo or beautiful text it’s a lot quicker to get it from a computer than it is to do a delicate design by hand.”
Visitors to the Nathan campus can experience the Australian Air Force’s F-18 flightsimulator while finding out more about studying aviation at Griffith. At Nathan they can also visit the Big Data Lab and experience virtual reality projects that students have worked, and along with a robot showing off its skills.
On the Gold Coast, Open Day visitors can see the work of students who have used smartphone technology to create the driverless car of the future with the eco-friendly IT smart car. There will also be 3D game presentations in the computer labs.
Associate Professor Jun Jo, of the Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems, says the drone dancing has been a hit activity over the last three years.
“It’s become one of the most popular demos,” he says.
“You just press a button and they dance. We don’t have to do anything but we have some safety nets for where they’re flying inside.”
In the financial trading room, students of banking, finance and financial planning use the Bloomberg Professional service used by more than 320,000 finance professionals around the world.
Griffith is strongly positioned to carry out historical market analysis, compare different investment strategies, evaluate complex financial instruments and analyse specific companies and industries.

At the virtual pharmacy dispensary stop on the tech trail visitors will be able to see the cutting edge facility that provides students with a truly immersive virtual environment.
The interactive experience enables students to work in different environments including hospital and community pharmacy from anywhere in the world without ever having to leave the classroom.
