A state level hammer thrower and a mature-aged student from Zimbabwe are among the latest intake of Griffith University students to start an internship at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC).
The new interns will be part of the 250 students who will undertake an internship with GOLDOC as part of the University’s partnership with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). TheGames will bethe biggest sporting event in Australia this decade.
The new student interns cross over a broad range of study areas including sports management, business, IT, communications and urban and environmental planning.
Information Technology intern Angus McLeod, who now calls the Gold Coast home after moving from Zimbabwe with his family in 1988, recently decided to follow his passion for computers and enrol in a Bachelor of Information Technology at Griffith.
“This internship is a great opportunity to learn and gain real experience that will help me achieve my goals,” he said.
“I can’t think of a better way to develop skills and build my network of contacts to support my new career, than working on the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.”

Village Operations intern and Bachelor of Business student Caitlin McFarlane said she was ecstatic about the opportunity to work on the largest sporting event in Australia this decade.
“My ultimate career goal is to work on large-scale sporting events and this internship provides the exact experience I need to achieve this dream,” she said.
Bachelor of Sports Management/Bachelor of International Business student Tan Nguyen, who came to study in Australia from Vietnam, also has aspirations to work on major sporting events due to his passion for playing tennis.
“This internship means so much to me because I understand how significant this opportunity is in relation to my future career,” he said.
“I am so grateful Griffith partnered with the GC2018 and is offering students this once in a life-time opportunity.”
Tan will be working in the Volunteer Engagement functional area at GOLDOC and has been impressed by the experience he has gained so far.
“So far I have learned a lot from the people in my team,” he said.
“They are very friendly and helpful which encourages me to learn and also makes me feel very comfortable in the new environment.”
Another to be part of the internship program is hammer thrower Samara Camilleri, who joined GOLDOC’s growing venue management team. Ms Camilleriis in her last semester of a Bachelor of Business with a double major in Sport Management and Event Management.
The GC2018 internship program has been specifically developed as part of Griffith University’s Official partnership with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and offers students a comprehensive way of combining study and work experience.
GC2018 Internship program academic lead Carol-Joy Patrick said students who undertook an internship would return to Griffith with an increased awareness of the value their studies have on their future careers.
“These students will be appealing to employers as a result of the experience with GOLDOC, with some of our students already offered employment by GOLDOC after their internship,” she said.
