Griffith University captain Lauren Brown has encouraged fellow students to come out in support of the sevens rugby team which will contest the final round of the Aon Uni 7s Series this weekend.

“It’s been so exciting to be involved in this competition and the buzz around each weekend has been fantastic,” Lauren, a sport management student, said.

“It would be wonderful to see students from Griffith cheering us on from the sidelines this Friday and Saturday with the final round taking place on the Gold Coast.

“They’ll be in very good company as our elite stars Shannon Parry and Demi Hayes will also be there to support us.”

Injuries have ruled out Shannon and Demi who were named in the Griffith squad when the inaugural series was announced earlier in the year.

Griffith opens its account on Friday afternoon against hosts, Bond University (2.40pm), before taking on Macquarie University (4.40pm) and University of Adelaide (7pm).

It will also be in action on Saturday in the play-off stages that will decide its final place on the competition ladder at the end of four very competitive rounds of rugby sevens. Griffith sits fourth on the series ladder going into the weekend action.

“The Aon Uni 7s Series has been a fantastic initiative for rugby sevens. It has really put the sport on the university map and created a competitive pathway into a fast emerging sport for women at university level,” Lauren Brown (left) said.

Lauren will again be joined by fellow students Laura Waldie (Bachelor of Oral Health Dental Science) and Katie Curtis (Bachelor of Education) for the weekend games. The Griffith squad shows two changes from last time out with Ivania Wong and Katie Brock coming back into the reckoning. It will be their first involvement since the opening round in Tasmania.

This weekend’s action kicks off at 1pm on Friday at Bond University and all games will be live streamed by aru.com.au
