Jake Fehlberg (below) last night collected Team Griffith’s 29th medal of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) after Australia edged out South Africa in a gripping final of the Mixed Pairs (vision impaired) in the Lawn Bowls at Broadbeach.
The Bachelor of Business graduate teamed up with Lynne Seymour to claim gold after a tense 12-9 victory that went to the last ball of the last end.

It means that after seven days of sporting endeavour at GC2018, athletes from the Griffith University community have amassed 17 gold, four silver and eight bronze medals.
Jake’s Australian Lawn Bowls teammate, Bachelor of Business student and Bachelor of Journalism graduate, Kelsey Cottrell, is also eyeing up a second medal of the Games after Australia advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Pairs.
Kelsey teamed up with Karen Murphy to guide the hosts to a 29-7 win over Papua New Guinea 29-7 yesterday morning, followed by a 20-14 win over England. They will aim to secure a medal when they meet Scotland in the last eight this morning.
On the track last night there was heartache for Bachelor of Nursing student, Riley Day (below). Her Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games adventure came to an agonising end in the semi-finals of the Women’s 200m after she finished fourth in a highly-competitive semi-final. Up against world-class athletes like Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Jamaica’s 200m champion Elaine Thompson and England’s 2014 Glasgow Games 200m bronze medalist Bianca Williams, the Griffith and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Scholarship recipient only missed out on tonight’s final by one hundredth of a second.
Bachelor of Business student, Matt Denny, returns to Carrara Stadium today to begin the hunt for his second medal of the Games. The 21-year-old will be in action in the qualifying from 11.10am with Friday night’s final his target.
On the opening night of diving there was to be no fairytale medal for Bachelor of Business student Teju Williamson in the
Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform Final. Teja linked up with Delhi 2010 gold medallist Melissa Wu to finish fourth after a series of five dives.
Teja was a late call-up to the Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) team after health reasons brought about the sudden retirement of Taneka Kovchenko. Bachelor of Exercise Science student Domonic Bedggood will have his first dive of the Games tomorrow.
