Double bronze for diving Dom

Bachelor of Exercise Science student, Dom Bedggood, claimed a brace of bronze on day nine of GC2018.

On a day when he was in sync with not one but two different teammates,Bachelor of Exercise Science student Domonic Bedggood has confirmed his Commonwealth Games pedigree with not one but two bronze medals. The Southport local’s endeavours take to 31 the number of medals won by Team Griffith athletes at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with two days of competition remaining.

Dom (23) claimed his first bronze medal of the day in the Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform Final diving alongside Australian teammate, Declan Stacey, before doubling up in the evening when he teamed up with Matthew Carter in the final of the Men’s Synchronised 3m Springboard. Dom, who was a Glasgow 2014 Games gold medalist, today focuseson the Men’s 10m Platform today.

Australia opened its Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens campaign with victories over Wales and England on the first day of action at Robina Stadium. Co-captained byBachelor of Education graduate Shannon Parry, the Australians powered past Wales with a 34-5 win in the afternoon before coming from behind to overcome England 29-12. Tonight they face Fiji at 7.21pm.

In boxing Bachelor of Public Relations and Communication student Skye Nicolson (left) will go for gold atOxenford Studios tonight. Skye booked her place in the decider with a winagainst Canadian Sabrina Aubin-Boucher last night, with four of the five judges giving her the decision. She’ll take on England’s Michaela Walsh in the final ofthe Women’s 57kg category at 6.32pm.

At Carrara Stadium last night, Matthew Denny’s bid for a place in the history books fell just short. The Bachelor of Business student was looking to win medals in both the hammer throw and the discus, but after a silver in the hammer on Sunday, he finished just outside the medals in fourth place with the discus. His best throw of 62.53m fell short of the best effort of Jamaican bronze medalist Traves Smikle.

Despite a strong run in his Games debut, Griffith alumnus and 400m specialist Murray Goodwin missed out on an athletics final during a dramatic afternoon at the track. TheAustralian team was disqualified from last night’s final aftera mistake by anchor Steve Solomon during the final changeover in the heats.Murray, a Bachelor of Secondary Education graduate from Griffith, ran a solid first leg to have Australia in the running and the team looked to have qualified in third place before the disqualification drama unfolded.

The final day of action at Carrara will see Bachelor of Nursing student and Griffith and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Scholarship recipient, Riley Day (right), line up for Australiain the final of the Women’s 4 x 100m Relay (2.57pm). The 18-year-old prodigy takes her place following the withdrawal of the injured Sally Pearson.

Also in action on the penultimate day of sport at GC2018 will be two cyclists in the Women’s Road Race. Katrin Garfoot, who completed a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education at Griffith, comes off a gold medal performance in the Women’s Individual Time Trial earlier in the week, whileDelhi Games bronze medalist and Bachelor of Communication graduate, Chloe Hosking, comes off a crash in the Tour of Flanders at the start of the month.

Master of Financial Planning student Jesse Wagstaf will line out with the Boomers in the Men’s Basketball semi-final at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning as Australia take on Scotland.

Griffith alumnus Jordyn Holzberger will be focused on gold when she lines up for the Hockeyroos in today’s decider against New Zealand at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre ,around the corner from Griffith’s Gold Coast campus. The sides drew 0-0 when they met earlier in the competition. The final starts at 12.45pm.

Team Griffith now holds 17 gold, four silver and 10 bronze medals from GC2018.
