Toowoomba the next stop for Griffith University’s STEM Showcase

Some of the best names in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) research will offer valuable insight into various fields of study when Griffith University’s STEM Showcase arrives in Toowoomba on May 15.

Griffith University experts with expertise in wide-ranging STEM industries including engineering, environmental science, aviation, IT and urban planning will be on hand to answer prospective students’ questions into the diverse programs offered at the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Logan campuses.

Griffith’s Head of Electronic Engineering in the School of Engineering and Built Environment Associate Professor Steven O’Keefe said the STEM Showcase is a fantastic way for future students to explore the many scientific careers available to them through one-on-one time with Griffith’s STEM experts.

“Students can talk to teaching staff who can explain what is involved in becoming skilled in STEM areas, and where this could take you in a lifelong career. Sometimes students can see the job titles but it is often difficult to see what living that career would be like. The STEM academics can give many examples of what it entails,” Associate Professor O’Keefe said.

“Not only can we explain what STEM careers will be like, but exactly the best way to attain the skills at university level that would make you sought by industries along those career paths.”

Griffith’s Marketing and Engagement Manager Damian Harris said giving participants the chance to receive face-to-face advice from Griffith University experts on how best to place themselves in tomorrow’s job market via Griffith’s unique STEM programs.

“The STEM Showcase is unique in that it travels around with representatives from the major STEM disciplines and gives everyone who comes along – students, teachers parents and those interested in further study – the chance to ask questions of the lecturers who teach in those disciplines,” he said.

“We think the skill set that comes from studying STEM sets students up for the fast changing work environment they will be entering. To assist people on that journey is very fulfilling.”

Participants will also receive valuable one-on-one advice from each Griffith University expert on how best to place themselves in tomorrow’s job market as well as find out more about the diversity and uniqueness of Griffith’s STEM programs.
