Two Griffith University students have picked up medals representing Australia at the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria.

Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice student, Molly Goodman, competed with the Australian Women’s Four which held off a late challenge from the Russians to win silver behind the United States.

Bachelor of Business student, Georgie Gotch, was part of the first Australian crew since 2006 to take out a medal in the Women’s Eight. After leading the early stages of the final, Australia had to eventually settle for bronze after a tight tussle with Canada.

Bachelor of Business student, Madeleine Edmunds, finished the World Championships as the seventh best Women’s Single Scull in the world after she came out on top in the B-Final.

The trio was among more than 900 athletes from 62 nations who competed for world champion status in 14 Olympic, six international and nine para-rowing boat classes.

“To be competing and winning medals at this level while also maintaining high levels of study shows the commitment of all three,” Olympic gold medal rower and Director, Griffith Sports College, Duncan Free, said.

“It’s a powerful testament to their commitment on both fronts. I’m delighted the Griffith Sports College could play its part by providing important support for each student on the academic front.”
