Ms Tamara Lorensen

Is Stress Derailing our Children?
The biology of stress is well researched with excessive stress and anxiety, particularly in the developing child, shown to have long-term adverse biological consequences - in the architecture of the brain and on general health and immunity. Anxiety also has negative effects on mood and behaviour and impairs the ability to learn.

The impact of stress and anxiety on humans from a biological perspective, followed by mood and behavioural outcomes, will be reviewed; and the sources of stress in school-aged children and implications for learning discussed.

Healthy development of children is impacted by the severity and intensity of stress, and current interventions can assist children to cope and build both resilience and a greater sense of self-efficacy. Building understanding of the management of anxiety in children is dependent upon the information available through neuroscience, epigenetics and current interventions using an integrated biopsychosocial model.
