Principal speaker

Dr Ferran Martinez i Coma

India's 2014 parliamentary elections had an electorate of more than 800 million and involved more than 18 million poll workers. Overall, India's electoral integrity performance is commendable. However, India's sub-national differences in performance and efficiency has remained relatively unexplored. In India, sub-national elections have great importance as the federal framework endows provinces with significant political- administrative powers (Yadav 1999).

In this presentation, Ferran introduces evidence on electoral integrity at India's sub-national elections. This is the first systematic academic expert survey on sub-national elections in India (and one of the few international attempts in comparative politics relying on sub-national expert surveys). By assessing, sub-national differences on electoral integrity, we are able to signal which parts of the electoral procedure need to improve.

Dr Ferran Martinez i Coma is a Research Fellow at Griffith Asia Institute and the Centre for Governance and Public Policy. His area of research is comparative politics, with an expertise in democratization, voting behaviour, turnout and electoral integrity. He is also interested in expert surveys. One of his research strands is on electoral integrity. Jointly with Indian academics, he is leading an expert survey on electoral integrity at the state level. His research has appeared in international academic journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, the Electoral Studies, and Party Politics. He is founding member and regular contributor of the blog Piedras de papel (in Spanish) and has contributed to ABC and SBS radio. Previously, Ferran was Research Associate at the Electoral Integrity Project at University of Sydney. He also served as a Senior Adviser for the Spanish Prime Minister (2010-2011).
