Peculiar Freedoms - Annelize Mulder

People often migrate in pursuit of a safer life. The commotion of the move abroad is followed by a sense of relief, breathing a bit easier. Except, what if past experiences hinder a complete surrender to this newly found refuge? In Peculiar Freedoms, Mulder uncovers the power of memory to recoil her, and many South African migrants, into discomfort and vulnerability as a result of their origin. Threats of the past haunt the present as they trigger involuntary memories. Mulder is especially interested in the effect normalised violence has on those that choose to leave. The traces and prolonged exposure to everyday violence are often subtle, yet unmistakable.
