Depression and Low Mood in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Mental health difficulties are very common in children with autism, with many children experiencing anxiety, depression and low mood. Research suggests that approximately 50% of children with autism experience depression. This rate is much higher than the rate for neurotypical children. The reasons for the elevated rates in autism are at present poorly understood. During this presentation Jacqui will discuss some the signs and symptoms of depression in autistic children, consider reasons why children with autism may be especially at risk of depression and explore strategies and tools that might be useful to support children with autism who are experiencing depression.

Hearing the child's voice
Much of our understanding about the experiences of children on the autism spectrum has come from information provided by others e.g. parents/carers/professionals. Hearing from the child about their life experiences is an area that has been largely neglected. Dr Kate Simpson will discuss methods used in research to elicit the viewpoints of children with autism. Also, she will provide examples from recent work conducted by the team at the Autism Centre of Excellence and highlight the strengths and limitations of these methods. This presentation has applications for people working with children on the autism spectrum.
