Valuing patient experiences in Queensland Emergency Departments

Abstract

Optimising the patient experience is central to the provision of high quality healthcare. Patient experiences are also integral to hospital reimbursement schemes, consumer choice, and healthcare policy formulation globally. However, there is no systematic or consistent way of incorporating the value of patient experiences into economic evaluation and value assessment frameworks. Thus the aim of this PhD is two-fold. Firstly, to propose a theoretical model whereby the patient experience, as a benefit in and of itself, can be incorporated into existing economic evaluation and value assessment frameworks alongside health outcomes and monetary cost. Secondly, to develop an emergency department (ED) patient experience classification system that:

1.Can efficiently describe a spectrum of possible ED patient care experiences, and

2. Is amenable to a valuation study whereby preference-based utility values for patient ED care experiences can be derived for use in economic evaluations.

EDs are the focus of this research because they are constantly under regulatory pressure to improve efficiency, process patients faster, and reduce care delivery costs whilst providing the highest quality of care. As such, this research aims to alleviate these pressures by assisting ED services to make resource allocation and funding decisions that are responsive to patient preferences.

Biography

Claudia Bull is a PhD candidate with the Centre for Applied Health Economics (CAHE). Her research aims to understand how patient experiences can be used to inform value-based healthcare, namely by incorporating the value of a patient's care experience into existing economic evaluation and value assessment frameworks.
