The use of pigments has been a constant part of the cultural lives of indigenous peoples across Australia. For more than 60,000 years Aboriginal peoples have selected, collected, processed and used ochres which have survived harsh environmental conditions to be among the few materials found throughout Australia's archaeological records, from the most ancient through to the most recent assemblages. This seminar will use the archaeometric study of pigments as a jumping-off point to discuss the lessons I have learned through consultation and collaboration with indigenous colleagues on archaeopigment projects across the continent.
