Figments of Figures | Adam Southgate, Bonnie Qin, Diane Green, Sallie Page

This group exhibition features recent works by Adam Southgate, Bonnie Qin, Diane Green, and Sallie Page. Through a variety of means including oil painting, collage, performance, drawing, and video, the artists explore the ongoing significance of figuration, re-figuration, or even un-figuration in painting. Here, familiar faces from cinema archives are reconfigured into unlikely matrixes; kin members from timeworn family photographs are reanimated and recontextualised; multitudes of possible selves cavort and canoodle with one another; and "magnificent or detestable' exchanges occur between and across race and culture lines.

Collectively, despite their diversity, these artists offer an understanding of figuration that celebrates appropriation, ambiguity, monstrosity, invention, and indeterminacy. Their figures are figments, beings possessed of indeterminate qualities, ghosts or apparitions perhaps, who remind us of the ever-entangled nature of the past and the present.
